1970
Hosted by MAKUALLA, the Conclave was September 11-13 at Camp McLoughlin.
Section Chief Mark Lillich, COLE SNASS' LAMATAI, selected an oval
white twill patch with Indian Chief wearing an eagle bonnet as a
memento. Lay Advisor Bob Hamreus, SKYLOO, urged all Arrowmen to
attend the 1971 National OA Conference to be held at the University
of Illinois campus in Champaign.
1971
Returning to the college setting at Oregon College of Education
was the 1971 Conclave, our 20th, September 10-12 hosted by COLE
SNASS LAMATAI. It was a pleasure to enjoy the great facilities at
OCE and all Arrowmen became involved in the program. The Pro-Con
discussion was a particularly interesting session. A few of those
participating played the "devils advocate" and a lively
and spirited discussion developed. Kent Lamoreux, SKYLOO, Section
Chief, did a great job at the Conclave and at the National Conference
in 1971 where he served as Deputy National Conference Chief-Administration.
In 1973 Kent received the DSA award, Only the second honoree of
this national award in the section and the first Scout. A totem
patch was designed--our sectional totem on black twill with red
R/E and white letters.
1972
The guest speaker for the 1972 Conclave was David Boshea, National
Executive Secretary of the Order of the Arrow. Section Chief Dave
Wilson, COLE SNASS LAMATAI, and host Lodge, TSISQAN, put on a good
presentation. A rounded triangle patch--light blue twill with black
letters and showing an outline of an Indian on horse was used. Also
the first Conclave mug with with the same design was presented.
Realignment of the national regions from Norwester Region XI to
the Western Region changed section designations from XIA to WIA.
1973
In 1973 we all traveled to Bend for an enjoyable Conclave at Central
Oregon Community College. We were treated to a gala dance and party
Friday night by host Lodge MAKUALLA. Bryan Lund, SKYLOO Section
Chief, arranged a great program. Our speaker was a teacher from
Bend, the National Honor Teacher of the year. The theme "Dedication
to Purpose" was incorporated in the Conclave patch--an arrowhead
shape, white twill black CIE and lettering with an American eagle
with a shield as the central design.
1974
"Reaffirming our Indian and Scouting Heritage" was selected
as the theme of the 1974 Conclave held at the Portland Air Base.
A special guest, Chief Frank White Buffaloman, grandson of Chief
Sitting Bull, gave an impressive performance at the banquet. Section
chief Shame Doran, MAZAMA, introduced guest speaker, Senator Mark
Hatfield, who inspired all Arrowmen. The banquet, presented by host
Lodge, SKYLOO, and served by the young ladies of the Sea Scout Post
"Crest of the Waves" was memorable. The patch was a tall
triangle, white twill with red border which pictured an eagle atop
a tree
1975
September 12-14 all Oregon Conclave delegates assembled at Grants
Pass High School as guests of host Lodge, MAZAMA. The Conclave newspaper
"Higher Vision", edited by Brad Harris, presented a memorial
to William Roy Clary, MAZAMA Lodge Advisor, 1952-75. "Bill"
served Crater Lake Council for over 60 years. Years earlier the
National Committee had awarded him the National OA Distinguished
Service Award, justly deserved, the first such award to an Oregon
Arrowman.
This, the 60th Anniversary of the OA, presented Section Chief Jim
Stratton, TSISQAN, with an inspired theme "Fellowship, Foundation
for Service". The Council of Chiefs, Lay Advisor Gary Woods,
and Professional Advisor Rich Johnson, developed a super program.
A colorful 3"x4" patch with blue twill red R/E showing
a thunderbird in front of mountains and the sunrise.
1976
Our U. S. Bicentennial celebration, 60 years of OA service to Scouting,
and our own 25th Conclave prompted the selection of the Conclave's
1976 theme, "Involvement: Past, Present and Future", represented
by the Vigil triangle and the words in black on a 3" round
white twill patch with red R/E. The 60th Anniversary Bicentennial
Awards by the Arrowmen who completed the requirements were showing
up on their sashes and stimulated others to renew their obligations
to the Order. Section Chief Brad Harris, SKYLOO, suggested that
all Arrowmen recall their pledge to cheerful service. Host Lodge
COLE SNASS LAMATAI selected OCE at Monmouth and the facilities were
the finest ever with superior food. A program highlighted by a multimedia
show was a great success and the keynote speaker was George Flanagan,
National OA Committee, and DSA recipient at the 1977 NOAC--the third
in Oregon.
1977
"We Love the Woods and Camping" certainly was appropriate
for the theme of the 1977 Conclave. Hosted by TSISQAN at Camp Baker,
Section Chief Craig Lilly, SKYLOO, along with Lay Advisor Tom McCready,
and Professional Advisor Jerry High, 'presented a program of merit.
A large patch white twill red bdr with the section totem design
and a matching neckerchief and mug were presented at a great banquet
The section awarded its first "Arrow of Honor" to Perry
Green. Guest speaker for the event was Vern Wertz.
1978
Central Oregon Community College at Bend gave Arrowmen an excellent
facility for our 27th Conclave. Host MAKUALLA and Vice Chief Dave
Edwards selected the theme 'NUWINGI ALLOSAGAN' (One who serves willingly).
The patch for 1978 was an arrowhead shape of turquoise twill with
black R/E and lettering with theme showing an Indian with purple
mountains in background. Milt Howe, Section Lay Advisor and current
Advisor, provided inspiring challenges for each Arrowmen to achieve.
1979
An impressive five-sided patch--one for each of the five Lodges,
with a map of Oregon incorrectly showing the area of each Lodge
and theme "With Wills United". Each Arrowman had the opportunity
to earn a spirit award ribbon attached to the patch showing that
he had completed program participation. Section Chief Dave Edwards,
who was also 1979 National Vice Chief of Activities, invited some
special guests including National Vice Chief Larry Brown, and Western
Region Chief Rich Good.
Section Arrow of Honor award was given to Brad Harris, SKYLOO, who
had also received the National Distinguished Service Award (DSA)
at the 1979 National Conference. This was only the fourth award
in our section. It was presented by Del Loder, member of the National
OA Committee and National Area 1 Advisor. The Conclave host, SKYLOO,
selected Camp Meriwether, and section Professional Advisor Craig
Riede assisted with the arrangements.
